A Day With My Memories

"I enjoy, occasionally, a day with my memories -- these paintings hanging on the walls of my mind."

"One way to meet new people is to listen more carefully to the people you see every day."

"It's important to express one's feelings, especially feelings like sympathy and gratitude that exist only in their expression."

"Shall I regret having had a dream that never came true?  No, no more than I would regret having had a lifelong friend who died."

"Occasionally it's good to challenge the likelihood that you were born into a world where nothing is any of your business."

"You need a friend who won't lie to you.  I mean, besides a friend who will."

"Meanwhile, my lawyer has advised against pleading temporary insanity, given the lack of evidence that it's temporary."

Nine Thoughts

Life is a series of choices, all needing to be made before you are remotely qualified to make them.

What do you say to a wayward child --  go and never brighten my door again?

Life is not fair, harder to acknowledge when it's not fair in your favor.

Society wants you marching to its tune.  If you start dancing to it, it is not amused.

I like to say that I have never known failure.  I have known a lot of partial successes.

You can break up a marriage of strangers and become friends, but it's harder to break up a marriage of friends and remain friends..

There is no human weakness so universal that it cannot be made an unforgivable sin by calling it betrayal.

Marriage vow:  "And do you  promise that if you haven't already told each other everything, you won't start now?"

Do I ask so much -- a little good news on  the front page, an occasional resurrection  in the obituaries?

Observations

Perseverance is just muleheadedness that succeeded.  Farsightedness is just craziness that was right.

The danger of caring only about yourself is that it so often leads to not caring
about anyone.

Doing a stupid thing doesn't make you stupid.  Doing it again and again, thinking it
makes you stubborn, makes you stupid.

One of the places to look for truth is in things we don't believe but think it important that our kids do.

One of life's simpler rules:  Never put yourself in the position of being harmed by someone telling the truth.

Ever ask yourself what you would do if you had tomorrow to live over again?

Loose Ends

"There's never just one loose end, so if you're feeling like a loose end, someone else is, too."

"I'd rather trust in the grace of God than luck, because, frankly, I'm not that certain Lady Luck even exists."

"It is easier to be good at something than to be good at faking it."

"You can lose the battle but win the war, assuming it's a war, and there was need for a battle."

"It is hard sometimes to let someone else live by the same deceptions you allow yourself."

"Material success is always tempered by the recollection that there was some sort of happiness that was supposed to come with it."

Leave Others Be

An important corollary to the Golden Rule is to leave others be as you would have them leave you be.

All anyone can tell you about the next life is to plan to get there ahead of your luggage.

You can as easily find the one true recipe for happiness as you can find the one true recipe for shepherd's pie.

How do you become a good person?  You practice the mannerisms until they become your own.

Time is the only one of life's resources that when it's all spent, you wish you had spent more of it foolishly.

Life is like a fancy restaurant -- it will always try to seat you at the worst table you will accept.

Hard as it is to be a true friend, it's easier than pretending.

I'll Tell You What's Sad

"I'll tell you what's sad.  It's sad to see little kids grow up and lose all their superhero powers."

"You don't have to train to be a grandparent.  Nature just molds you into an entertainment suitable for a younger audience."

"The trouble with getting up in the morning is that it's hard to rescue a day that begins with such a basic mistake."

"It's great to be friends with someone who's fun, but when they stop being fun, it doesn't necessarily mean they don't still need a friend."

"Two's company, three's a crowd, which leaves us to decide for ourselves what one is."

"First, without consulting you, they stop consulting you, and then you're notified you will no longer be notified."

"Change does not happen overnight -- until it's ready to happen, then overnight is exactly when it happens."

Be Reluctant To Judge

Be reluctant to judge another, for it's hard to know another person's true intent -- or the true intent of the judge.

I look at it this way -- if I always got what I prayed for, I'd be praying to someone no wiser than I am.

I believe in divine intervention.  I just don't believe it's the reason any particular number comes up in Powerball.

I'll tell you what's annoying.  It's annoying when people say, "You're only kidding yourself," when you're seriously trying to delude yourself.

There's nothing like seeing your reflection in a store window to get you thinking, "There but for the grace of God go I."

Madness is defined in different ways at different times, sanity being the knack of keeping current.

There are words you'd be ready to believe again -- if only someone would say them again.

Touching Base #2

Life is a process by which, one by one, the trophies on your mantel are replaced by pictures of the grandkids.

I've come to believe that you win at life by quietly accumulating the most consolation prizes.

It's  a tough mindset to change --  that you don't win unless someone else loses.

Never be discouraged by the opinion of people who don't know what you're about to accomplish.

If only regret had action's purpose.  If only action had regret's information.

It takes no skill to belittle people -- to scoff at their harmless pretenses and strip them of their all-too-transparent masks.  It takes only a greater pretense and a more subtle mask.

Touching Base

I have resumed work on my third book after an "extended" break of one day.  I've also discovered that a periodic post is probably required to keep this site on Google's priority search list.  Hence here is the first of what will be several strategically-placed posts over the course of the summer.

And while I'm here, a few new thoughts:

"When someone you know seems always defensive, what do you suppose you always seem like to them?"

"I suppose we could all live in our own private bubbles.  You could even place them side-by-side and call them neighborhoods"

"I don't defend my honor.  My honor is perfectly able to defend itself.  If I'm defending it, it's my pride."

"People who would never trespass on your property will trespass on your time, as if your time were not your property."

There are things you've done that come back to haunt you -- and things that haunt you that you're still doing."

"You can't talk sense to people who oppose it on principle."

Bottom Of The Bag

Here is everything left in my work file, pretty much as it occurred to me.  I will now turn my attention to cranking out a new book for September.  See all you folks then.

                                                                 *******

"You can wander a loneliness on your own, but it takes two to explore a solitude."

"Yes, I have been alone in a crowd, having more than once sought a crowd for that purpose."

"It's a rare couple that doesn't celebrate the anniversary of more than one promise."

"You cannot return to a time, but you can return, sometimes, to a beginning."

"There is almost no good thing you search for alone in life that you don't find only half of."

"I've learned this about paying your respects -- it is very hard to overdress for the occasion."

"My wish for everyone is to live happily ever after -- but not until your story is over."

"You can appeal to someone's common decency, but you can't supply it for them."

"How to make a marriage last?  You keep working at it, and in the meantime, you keep
celebrating anniversaries of the same wedding."

"I wouldn't mind living my life over, this time with the ability to say no."

"It is hard sometimes to remember that you woke up just a few hours ago with no intention whatever of antagonizing anyone."

"I dunno, there are days when I feel that if I walked down the street in a mask, no one would recall seeing anyone in a mask."

Today's thought question: "Haven't you always been too good with your hands to wring them now in despair?"

"The one thing I would guess about the Lord of Judgment is that He probably won't blame your parents."

It's not that two people say, "Let's grow apart."  It's that there's never anything else they feel like doing.

"The great unspoken truth is how much of friendship is unspoken truth."

"The advantage of silence over words is that there's a wider range of things you can claim you didn't mean by it."

"Stay out of the court of self-judgment, for the jury has already formed an opinion."

"I've never thought it my business to judge others, preferring to take the chance that I am not God."

"One of love's greater challenges is how to travel diverging paths and still meet back every night at the same place."

With apologies where due,

A Watershed Moment...

"A watershed moment in life is when you realize that what you can or can't do is a decision, not a recollection."

"Learn to hold your tongue, and you will be fluent in every language and on all topics."

"Sometimes a lasting relationship just comes down to two people both wanting it to be the way it was."

"For most of us, the proof that there is Someone to pray to is the incontrovertible fact that there is someone to pray for."

So the other night I'm gazing into the stars and thinking, "Maybe we're alone in the universe because no one else got thrown out of Paradise."

"The good news?  The good news is that a meteor is headed for Earth and is expected to get here before the election."

A Message

I want to mention that I'm planning a new book, for September release, titled "Round Up The Usual Subjects, The Expanded Edition."  I intend it as a final, comprehensive collection of my quotes, containing the best from my first two books and a small increment of quotes I have written since. My aim is to produce a standard trade-size volume that I might offer to libraries and, perhaps, place in bookstores..

I plan the book in both hardcover and soft, in size, 6 x 9, slightly larger than the 5 x 8's I've been publishing.  I am bargaining with the renowned artist, Joan Brault, to supply a few illustrations (smile).

To buyers of my earlier books, I want to say that I don't expect you to line up to purchase the new book.  You have done your part already, and I ask no more.  I intend this book, as Shakespeare said, "For ages yet unborn" or at least for the 99.9 percent of the book-buying public who haven't yet run across my work.

Will I continue to post and tweet between now and September?  Very occasionally -- just enough to get you kind folks to check in once in a while, I hope.

Smiles to all,
rb

Life's Choice

Life's Choice:  You can be the person it takes to get what you want, or you can be the person you want and take what you get.

"What's amazing, looking back, is how satisfying a life can be fashioned from dreams that never came true."

"Which of us is not a wanderer in this world, convinced that everyone else knows where they're going."

"You can tell a clever conspiracy, because the people it conspires against always think they are part of it."

"The way to argue with an articulate person is to answer with a silence and let them articulate it."

"Eventually you come to understand this -- that nothing you say is going to be any wiser than the person you say it to."

I Dreamed....

I dreamed that I was the last person on Earth, and I ran into two dogs deep in conversation, and one looked up and said, "Oh, forgive us, we thought you had all left."

"Me, I simply believe that no human being is going to get the last laugh.  I don't know that I would make a religion out of it, but many do."

"Life is a loan, and we are borrowers up to our eyeballs, and yet we debate whether there is a really a lender."

"You cannot always extend the network of your friends, but you can always extend the network of those you pray for."

"Shall I regret a dream that gave me so much hope for so long, merely because it never came true?"

If God Had Wanted...

"If God had wanted a better you, He would have created a better you, and that's the point -- He did."

"Sometimes you wish you were someone else entirely, although not usually anyone you've met personally."

"Only a man is allowed to give up.  There is always someone for whom a woman must carry on."

"You can see it as risking betrayal, disappointment and ingratitude, or you can see it as faith, hope and charity."

On the Seventh Day, the Creator sat back, took off his gloves and said,"No fingerprints.  They'll just have to find me in the sunsets."

Love Can Be...

"Love can be a conversation about nothing, or it can be a quiet comfort in each other's presence that is about everything."

"I like to walk the beach at either end of the day, when the sun is on the horizon, because the couples you pass are always in love."

"Sometimes it's fate, and sometimes it's just two people who sought the same quiet corner in the same noisy room."

Love story: "She was a walker in the sand, a stroller in the rain, a frequenter of places where nobody goes -- and they kept meeting."

"It is sad to complicate a simple thing, but it is sadder to lose a simple thing because you were unwilling to complicate it."

My Advice?

"My advice?  Learn to judge your actions on what you knew at the time -- or else learn to act at the time on what you know now."

"There are storms in any relationship, not usually indicative of climate change."

"If there's one accusation I'm guilty of, and happily so, it is that there are people I'm protecting.

"Me, I'm not a person who goes around with an entourage, although if I had an entourage, I would probably go around with it."

"If I have one regret, it's that I'll never know what I might have accomplished if I had been briefed every morning by a team of advisors."

"We learn by doing, and what we usually learn is not to do it again."

Only In Love...

"Only in love can you get blindsided by something you saw coming."

"Act, even though you judge it hopeless, for you have a greater ability to act than to judge hopelessness."

"A good part of courage is just being sick and tired."

"One difference between good and evil is that evil, when challenged, does not suspend its principles."

Words most likely to be heard at the Last Judgment:                      "You did WHAT in my name?"

Who Most Of Us Are.

"There is much that one person can do, and fortunately that is who most of us are."

"Before you recite the reasons why you can't, try to imagine them as the reasons why you didn't."

"I've learned that just standing there with a silly look on your face is better than uttering words to that effect."

"It's good, occasionally, to re-examine the likelihood that you were born into a world where nothing is any of your business."

"It is hard not to be irritated by people who act innocent just because they're not guilty of anything."

"Whether you dream big or small, it's important occasionally to dream real."

Blaming The Messenger

"I wonder, when we rail against God, if we are only blaming the messenger."

"I have found that when I leave behind my preconceived notions of people, I rarely go back for them."

"It is a rare person who talks to God and doesn't return with at least one new commandment."

"Happiness is an occasional brief glance into how simple it all can be."

"To put it in timely terms, life is day after day of it being too early to declare a winner."

"The great thing about being an outgoing person is that you meet outgoing strangers."

The First Thing To Remember...

"The first thing to remember about the art of conversation is that you are not the other person's favorite subject."

"It is tolerable -- the lie that gets you through your day, if you can return each evening to a truth that gets you through your night."

"To think that you haven't the energy for commitment is to greatly underestimate commitment as an energy source."

"Self-respect is spending a half-hour deciding what to wear on the 10th anniversary of the last time anyone noticed."

It doesn't hurt to say to someone, "Well done," especially if you want it medium-rare.

A Sufficient Goal...

"A sufficient goal for any day is to take some small step in the direction of your journey."

"To be happy is to make a little more meaningful the life of everyone who ever prayed you would be."

"We would more often be happy, I think, if we could imagine the celebrations it sets off in heaven."

"It is not a code of ethics if you have to suspend it whenever your ethics are put to the test."
